A luxury pool table asks for very little in return for decades of use, but the small amount of care it does require makes an enormous difference. Here is what actually matters and what you can safely ignore.
Brush the cloth after every session, not just when it looks dusty. Chalk dust and skin oils work into the weave over time and slow the roll of the balls unevenly across the surface. A soft table brush, always moved in one direction along the nap, takes less than two minutes and is the single most effective habit you can build.
Control the room, not just the table. Wood and slate both respond to humidity and temperature swings. Keep the room within a stable range, away from direct sunlight and radiators, and avoid placing the table near exterior doors that let in damp air.
Clean spills immediately, but never with water on the cloth. Wool and nylon blends stain permanently if liquid soaks in, so blot rather than rub and let it dry naturally. For the wood, a dry microfibre cloth is usually enough.
Check the level twice a year. Even the best installation can shift slightly as a house settles or floors expand and contract. A simple spirit level across the rails will tell you immediately if something needs adjusting.
Cloth does not last forever, and that is fine. Expect to have it replaced every few years depending on how often the table is used. Treat this as routine maintenance rather than a failure of the table itself.
None of this is complicated. It simply asks for attention, which is exactly what a piece this considered deserves.
